FARMERS GROUPS SUPPORT NON-EXTENSION OF RICE ARRIVALS UNDER MAV
Several farmers’ organizations (FOs) from Pampanga and Bulacan trooped to the National Food Authority’s head office in Quezon City to show their support for the non-extension to the February 28, 2017 set deadline for the arrival of rice imports under the minimum access volume (MAV) scheme. They agreed with the decision of NFA Administrator Jason Laureano Aquino (extreme right) not to extend the deadline for the rice arrivals. They said that they are starting to harvest their palay produce. They are apprehensive that the local buying price of palay will be adversely affected with the influx of rice imports during the harvest season, which starts this month. The FOs passed resolutions asking the government to prioritize the welfare of the local farmers.
