The National Food Authority in Samar assured It has sufficient rice inventory to meet the requirements of local government units (LGUs) and relief agencies for distribution to flood victims in the area.

Thousands of people were affected by flash floods and landslides in several municipalities in the provinces of Eastern and Northern Samar caused by incessant rains for several days now.

Local NFA offices in Northern Samar initially released 1,000 bags of rice to the Provincial Government of Northern Samar for distribution to the LGUs of Catubig and Las Navas; 300 bags to the LGU of Catarman and 75 bags to Congressman Ben Evardone.  Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 8 has also signified its intention to purchase 2,000 bags for distribution to displaced families.

NFA Officer in Charge Tomas Escarez said that the agency’s rice inventory in Region 8 stands at 510,509 bags. The agency’s nationwide rice inventory is 12,048,546 bags as of December 12, 2016.  Escarez added that field offices in Region 8 were instructed to issue the best quality rice to LGUs and relief agencies.

“We are ready to respond anytime to provide the rice requirements of various relief agencies and LGUs.  We have a standing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with relief agencies such as the DSWD, Office of Civil Defense and LGUs for the supply of their rice requirements for relief operations during natural disasters, calamities and other emergencies,” Escarez explained.
